CHARLESTON, S.C. – Alyssa Beck and Laura Ortega scored a goal in each half to open the College of Charleston women's soccer season with a 2-0 win over North Florida.
The College started the game on the back foot with the Ospreys dominating the opening exchanges. Charleston grew into the game as they broke the Ospreys high pressure with Beck flicking a long ball forward for Ortega to volley into the top corner, but play was pulled back for offside.
In the 14th minute Maddy Brill-Edwards found space on the edge of the box after a well-worked short corner, but her effort from 20 yards flew over the bar.
Six minutes later Charleston took the lead. Ana Lesmes kept the ball alive on the right byline with Ali Freitas playing the ball to Talia Colchico at the right of the box. Her deep cross found Beck who headed from eight yards through the goalkeeper's legs to give CofC a 1-0 lead.
Five minutes into the second half Frietas nearly doubled the lead through a curling half-volley from 18 yards that just went wide of the top right corner.
In the 55th minute Charleston doubled the lead. Raymara Barreto sprayed a crossfield pass to Hannah Farmer on the right wing. Farmer played the ball across the six-yard box for Ortega to pass into the bottom corner and claim her first goal of the young season.
Genevieve Henderson made one more save in the final 30 minutes of the half with Charleston (1-0-0) seeing the game out comfortably to register the season opening win for head coach Christian Michner.
Postgame Quotes - Head Coach Christian Michner
On the game…
"Always exciting to start the season off with a win. All credit to them, they did a great job of really pressuring us all night. High pressure is not easy to deal with in this game and so I thought we did a good job as the as the game wore on in playing past that pressure and the we got the win 2-0."
On the second goal…
"Of course that's passing patterns, they drew it up nicely. It was a great ball out wide [from Raymara Barreto], Hannah Farmer did a nice job running onto it and squared it in and Laura Ortega, Johnny on the spot, smashes it home and we're off to the races."
On getting the first win of the season…
"Super important, we want to start fast. Playing at home we talk a lot about locking it down and being a really difficult team to play at home. My team did that tonight, we really didn't give up a lot of chances. There was some set pieces that Gen [Henderson] had to deal with in the net, but other than that through the run of play I though the Cougs did a great job tonight."
