HANAHAN, S.C. – Junior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) led the College of Charleston women's golf team to a seventh-place finish against the best teams in the country at the 15th Annual Cougar Classic held at Yeamans Hall Club.
Huskey put together back-to-back under-par rounds of 68 and 71 to finish tied for ninth individually at 5-under par for the tournament. Her first-round 68 tied a career best. She finished two strokes back of 2018 Annika Award winner and NCAA Women's Golfer of the Year Maria Fassi of Arkansas (-7).
Junior Anna-Theresa Rottloff (Dusseldorf, Germany) also carded a pair of under-par rounds with a 71 and 69 to finish tied for 15th (-4).
Due to the approach of Hurricane Florence, the Cougar Classic was shortened to 36 holes. Preseason No. 12-ranked Florida won the team title (-30) for the third time in tournament history next to 2012 and 2013.
No. 25 Vanderbilt finished runner-up (-27) followed by No. 3 Arkansas in third (-16), No. 14 Furman fourth (-11), No. 15 Florida State fifth (-8) and No. 17 Wake Forest sixth (-5). The 19-team field also included No. 20 and eighth-place Baylor (+1) which finished behind the Cougars, who carded a 36-hole total of 573 (-3).
It marked the second-best finish for CofC at its home-hosted event behind a third-place finish in 2013.
Florida's Sierra Brooks shot a final-round 62 which marked the lowest round in tournament history. She was the individual medalist with a 36-hole total of 127 (-17). Brooks was the fourth-ever Florida player to win the tournament individual title next to Camilla Hedberg in 2012, Anna Young in 2013 and Taylor Tomlinson in 2015.
Up next, the Cougars will compete at the Boston College Intercollegiate hosted by Boston College on Sept. 24-25 at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass.
