CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's basketball team will host NCAA Division III powerhouse Nebraska Wesleyan in a first-time meeting and exhibition game between the two schools on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena.
Tickets are priced at $10. The preseason contest will serve as a tune-up for the Cougars' 2019-20 season home opener slated against USC Upstate on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena.
Head Coach Earl Grant enters his sixth season with the Cougars and 20th year overall in the college coaching ranks. Charleston returns two starters from last year's 24-9 squad including preseason Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Grant Riller, who finished the season ranked No. 20 nationally averaging a team-leading 21.9 points per game.
"They (Nebraska Wesleyan) are a very good program," said Grant, who played at NCAA Division II Georgia College from 1998-2000. "I played small college basketball and we wanted to compete against a very good team to prepare us for our season. This is a team that is very capable. We have to play well. They have a bunch of guys who can make shots. I'm excited we get to play in front of our fans again."
The Prairie Wolves are just two years removed from winning the 2018 NCAA Division III national championship title. Last season, they compiled a 27-2 overall record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. They are led by senior guard and preseason All-American Nate Schimonitz (16.5 ppg).
NWU was recently picked to win the American Rivers Conference and tabbed Preseason No. 2 behind UW-Oshkosh in the NCAA Division III Preseason Top 10 Rankings behind by Street & Smith's Magazine.
The Cougars last played a team from the Cornhusker State in 1994 (L, 74-72 to Nebraska) at the Puerto Rico Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They are 5-0 in exhibition games in the Earl Grant Era.
"They are a very well-coached team," said junior guard Brevin Galloway (7.9 ppg in 2018-19). "We know they will play hard and score the ball offensively. It will be a good game and good test for us tomorrow."
Live scoring from the exhibition game will be available at: www.CofCStats.com.
Men's basketball season and single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased by calling the CofC Ticket Office at (843) 953-COFC or online at: www.CofCSports.com/tickets.
