JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile) led the College of Charleston women's golf team to a tied for fourth-place finish with No. 39-ranked Old Dominion (+13) on the final day of the Briar's Creek Invitational held at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek on Tuesday.
In a tough field comprised of eight Top 50-ranked teams in the country, the Cougars topped five of those schools behind Nilsson's play in the final round. It was Charleston's fifth Top-5 finish or better this season.
She made birdies on the 1st, 8th, 9th, 11th and 13th holes to close out the tournament with a 2-under par 70. Nilsson shot even par for the tournament for a four-way tie for 10th in a 93-player field comprised of six Top 100-ranked golfers. It marked her third Top 10 individual finish since transferring to CofC from South Carolina last season.
"It's great to see Isi playing well again," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "She helps us become a special team when she is playing well. It was a total effort this week and everyone had a part in it. That's what makes us good and is great for us moving forward."
Juniors Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) and Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) both turned in Top 25 finishes – Huskey 23rd with rounds of 71, 72 and 77 (+4) and Rottluff tied for 24th with rounds of 74, 74 and 73 (+5).
No. 23-ranked Michigan State won the team tournament title with a three-round score of 856 (-8) to edge fellow Big Ten Conference foe and runner-up Indiana (E) by eight strokes. No. 35 Campbell was third (+9), CofC and ODU fourth, Long Beach State sixth (+15), No. 20 Furman seventh (+17), Kansas and No. 22 Clemson eighth (+20), No. 45 East Carolina 10th (+22), No. 27 Illinois 11th (+23) and No. 50 Penn State 12th (+24).
"With our team performance, I couldn't be prouder of this group," said Futrell, whose Cougars beat Furman, Kansas, Clemson, ECU, Illinois and Penn State. "From the way we started with our first three holes on Monday to being able to beat a lot of really good ranked teams today, I'm just happy as can be in the way that this team played."
Michigan State turned in the fourth-lowest 54-hole team total in tournament history behind North Carolina (848) in 2018, Florida (849) in 2017 and Campbell (854) in 2018.
No. 59-ranked Allyson Geer-Park of Michigan State was the individual medalist shooting rounds of 67, 69 and 67 for a 13-under par 203. It was the lowest tournament total in tournament history surpassing Kelly Whaley of North Carolina (204) in 2018.
"Hats off to Michigan State they had a special tournament this week," Futrell said. "Allyson Geer-Park had an unbelievable tournament-record performance for Michigan State."
Ana Paula Valdes of Clemson (2nd, -9), Alexis Miestowski of Indiana (3rd, -6), No. 96-ranked Emily Hawkins of Campbell (T4th, -3), No. 79-ranked Alice Hewson of Clemson (T4th, -3) and No. 39-ranked Natalie Srinivasan of Furman (T4th, -3) were honored on the all-tournament team.
The Cougars will enjoy the rest of the spring break week off, before their final regular-season tournament at the Edisto Island Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern on March 31-April 1 at The Plantation Course at Edisto on Edisto Island, S.C.
"If we continue to play like we did this week, we will be very difficult to beat the rest of the year," Futrell said. "It was one of the top performances we had all year and rivals what we did at the Cougar Classic in the fall (among the nation's top teams). It's really great to see us come full circle."
