HANAHAN, S.C. – In its season opener, the College of Charleston women's golf team played toe-to-toe with the nation's best to tie preseason No. 5-ranked Florida State for seventh at the 16th Annual Cougar Classic held at Yeamans Hall Club.
Coming into the tournament, the Seminoles were the highest-ranked team in the field according to the WGCA Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll, while the Cougars were the 15th-seeded team.
CofC shot 3-under par during the final round on Tuesday with a 2-under 70 from junior Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.), 71 from senior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) and a pair of 72s from freshman Emily Dunlap (Greenville, S.C.) and senior Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany).
No. 7 Vanderbilt claimed the team tournament title for the first time in the 16-year history of the event setting a new Cougar Classic record for lowest tournament total with an 837 (-27) and beating last year's national runner-up and No. 9 Wake Forest by one stroke (-26).
No. 8 and defending Cougar Classic champion Florida was third (-24), No. 18 Arkansas fourth (-9), Furman and UCF tied for fifth (-2), CofC and FSU tied for seventh (+2), North Carolina ninth (+3), No. 13 Auburn 10th (+6), No. 24 Campbell 11th (+11), Tennessee 12th (+12), Maryland 13th (+15), NC State 14th (+20), Penn State 15th (+34), Boston College 16th (+50) and Georgetown 17th (+58).
"We know we are a very experienced team," said Futrell, who is in his 24th year with the Cougars and returns two of the Colonial Athletic Association's top golfers in Huskey and Rottluff from a year ago. "I was very proud of them. They really played toe-to-toe with all of the teams this week. Anytime you can tie the No. 5 team in the country (in Florida State) and beat the No. 13 team in the country (in Auburn), it's great for our program. It helps us kick off what we hope to be a great year."
Huskey was the Cougars' top finisher with rounds of 66, 74 and 71 tying for seventh on the individual leaderboard at 5-under par for the tournament with Beatrice Wallin of Florida State and Lauren Walsh of Wake Forest. She was a day removed from tying the school record for lowest individual round with her opening-round 66 in a 93-player field that included 18 Top 100-ranked golfers on Monday.
"Victoria had a great finish," Futrell said. "Top 10 in this type of field is just an amazing finish for her. But today, it was a total team effort. Jodee Tindal shot 70 and we got a 72 from our freshman, Emily Dunlap. Every shot counts. It was great to see everyone in the starting lineup be a major contributor this week. If we continue to do that, it's going to be a fun year for all of us."
Auston Kim of Vanderbilt was crowned the individual medalist of firing a new tournament 54-hole total of 200 (-16). Her first-round 65 tied as the third-lowest round in tournament history. Her teammate Louise Yu was the individual runner-up (-9).
The tournament was condensed into a two-day event instead of a three-day event with 36 holes played on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday due to Hurricane Dorian.
"They do such an amazing job at Yeamans Hall," Futrell said. "We think it's the best tournament in the country and we have a lot of people tell us that and it's always nice to hear. This year, the staff went above and beyond what they normally do to get this course and club ready for all of the teams. It was almost perfect conditions (despite weather interruption from Hurricane Dorian last week)."
CofC's next test will be against conference foes at the Elon Invitational on Sept. 23-24 at Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C.
"We just have to get some rest with it being such a hectic and stressful week with campus being closed due to Hurricane Dorian." Futrell said. "We need to let them regroup the next couple of days, and then, we will start to get to work on the next tournament."
