CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 24-ranked College of Charleston women's golf team will participate this week in the inaugural Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon on Sept. 23-24 at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C.
The 18-hole course features 6,706 yards from the longest tees for a par of 71. It will mark just the second tournament of the fall season for the Cougars, who achieved their highest national ranking in program history last week in the latest Golfweek College Team Rankings.
They will compete against another competitive tournament field that includes Appalachian State, Charleston Southern, Cleveland State, Gardner Webb, North Carolina A&T, Presbyterian and Wofford. Host Elon will field an "A" and "B" squad, while Campbell will play with just individuals.
Senior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) was the Cougars' top finisher in the team's last outing at the 16th Annual Cougar Classic on Sept. 9-10 at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C., where she carded a school-record tying 66 in the opening round. She is joined in this week's starting lineup by senior Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany), junior Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.), freshman Emily Dunlap (Greenville, S.C.) and junior Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England).
Junior Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany), freshman Daniela Spillert (Miami, Fla) and sophomore Kirsty Brodie (Blairgowrie, Scotland) will compete as individuals. This will mark the first competition of the fall season for von Stosch and Spillert.
'We look forward to playing at Alamance Country Club this week," said CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell, whose Cougars placed seventh versus six preseason nationally-ranked teams at the season-opening Cougar Classic to earn their current national ranking. "It is a great old Donald J. Ross track and I think scores have a chance to be low this week. Hopefully, we can convert on our birdie chances. If we are able to do that, we should have a great week."
The tournament format will be 36 holes of continuous play on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start and the final round played on Tuesday with a 9 a.m. (ET) shotgun start.
CofC will be paired with Elon and Gardner-Webb for both rounds on Monday and live tournament scoring will be available at: www.BirdieFire.com
