CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's golf squad polished off its best tournament of the young season thus far with a second-place finish at the Evie Odom Invitational in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Tuesday. CofC bested 11 teams to place second overall at the tournament hosted by Old Dominion, as the Cougars carded an 8-over par 848 at the Par-70 Princess Anne Country Club.
Head coach Jamie Futrell's team posted a 284 on Tuesday after firing a 277 on Monday – the second-best round in program history. The Cougars beat Penn State, South Florida and Coastal Carolina, among others, en route to the second-place team finish.
Freshman Emma Schimpf secured her first career Top-10 performance with a T-7 finish. That marks the best finish by any Cougar so far this season. Schimpf fired a 69 on Tuesday after a career-best 68 on Monday and rounded out her tournament at 3-under par for the week.
"What a great tournament for us this week," Futrell said. "We started out on fire today, but scuffled in the middle of our round. I was proud of how we regained our composure to finish strong. Emma played well the entire week. I think we will be saying that a lot during her career."
Schimpf's fellow freshman MK Talledo placed T-11 in her second career start, firing a 72 on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 2-over par. Talledo's week was anchored by a second-round career-best 69.
Sophomore Emily Dunlap rose another 10 spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday with a 1-over 71. She placed T-20 overall. Sophomore Viktoria Hund and senior Smith Knaffle both finished T-24 and senior Jodee Tindal wound up T-42
The Cougars now return home to host the Edisto Island Invitational from Oct. 10-12.
