CHARLESTON, S.C. – Fifteen College of Charleston athletes, including the top two pole vaulters in school history, will compete on Saturday at the App State Invite in Boone, N.C.
The Cougars will also compete in Columbia at the USC Invitational on Jan. 28-29 and the USC Open on Feb. 18 to round out the indoor track and field portion of their schedule.
"We are excited to get our track and field season underway," said 19th-year head coach Amy Seago. "It's always great to have a meet in early December since we've been practicing since fall. The opportunity to compete gives us something to work towards and helps us measure where we are training-wise. We are able to evaluate what we need to tweak and focus on over our school break."
Luzy Lieger and Chloe Christian begin the season ranked 1-2 in the CofC record book in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. Lieger has a PR of 4.00m (13 feet, 1 ½ inches) which she established while taking second at the CAA Championships last May.
Christian owns a PR of 3.80m (12-5 ½), a mark she set when finishing third at the conference meet in 2019. Kathryn Shubert and Tonet Tallie join the duo in the pole vault competition, and Tallie will also run in the 55 hurdles.
The mile features Rhian Purves, who ranks fourth in school history in the event with a time of 5:05.77. She also stands sixth in the indoor 800 (2:20.39) and 10th in the indoor 5000 (18:25.88) as well as seventh outdoors in the 1500 (4:42.92). Grace McGrew joins Purves in the mile.
Lily Nowakowski and Kaitlynn Bailey top the sprinters competing in the 55 dash. Nowakowski ranks sixth in school history in the 60 (8.02), and Bailey is ninth in the outdoor 400 (58.92).
Also in the field for the 55 are Alicia Wilson and Sara VandenAssem, and Bailey will run in the 300 along with Gianna Cucinotta, Laurie Fogleman, Kayla Porter, Lilli Sustaita and Asiah Gadson.
The Cougars will field two teams in the 4x300 relay. Bailey, Cucinotta, Nowakowki and Porter make up one squad, and Sustaita, Gadson, Wilson and Fogleman will be the second.
