Rock Hill is "Payton Place" for Cougars in Win Over Mount St. Mary's

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Payton Wade hit a two-run homer and later scored the winning run, and Payton Lemire pitched two shutout innings for her first collegiate win to lift College of Charleston to a 5-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's in its first contest at the Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic.
The Cougars dropped their second game when Neli Casares-Maher homered in the bottom of the sixth to give Syracuse a 4-2 win. CofC is back in action Sunday with games against St. Francis at 11:45 a.m. and Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m.
The Cougars trailed the Mountaineers 3-0 when Wade blasted a shot to center in the fourth. An inning later, Jenna Carter singled, stole second and scored on a double by Aniz Roman, her first career hit and RBI, and Wade singled and came across on a double by Riley Miller to give CofC the lead in the sixth.
Kayla Gutierrez gave the Cougars an insurance run with an RBI single, and Lemire slammed the door shut following a one-out single in the seventh. Lemire struck out three in relief of starter Carli McCants, who fanned six in five innings.
CofC scored once in the fifth and sixth against Syracuse to wipe out a 2-0 deficit, with Miller driving in the tying run with a single. After the Orange took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, Mia Dittoe led off the seventh with her first career hit, but the Cougars were unable to mount a threat.
Kylie Burke struck out four in six innings, and Wade had two more hits to give her four on the day. Kaia Oliver fanned six in a complete game for Syracuse.
