CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's golf team wrapped up its season-opening tournament, the Cougar Classic, on Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Club. Head coach Jamie Futrell's squad hosted the renowned event that featured 17 teams all ranked in the nation's Top 104 in GolfWeek's rankings.
CofC posted a 25-over par 889, firing a 6-over 294 in Tuesday's final round. Sophomore Viktoria Hund anchored the Cougars' last 18 holes with a 1-under 71, securing her sixth round of par or better in nine career events. Hund was CofC's lowest scorer, finishing T-46 with a 4-over par 220 for the tournament.
"I just want to say congratulations to Arkansas' Brooke Matthews on a remarkable performance after setting an NCAA 54-hole record with a 25-under par," Futrell said. "As far our team, we played well the last two rounds, but we just can't start the way we did and catch up when we're facing a field as good as this. I'm happy with the final 36 holes and we have a little bit of momentum heading into next week."
Freshman Emma Schimpf highlighted the week for CofC in her collegiate debut. She stayed consistent all week, firing three consecutive 1-over par 73s to finish T-36 in her first career college tournament. Schimpf collected 34 pars and nine birdies over 54 holes.
In her CofC debut, South Carolina transfer Smith Knaffle sunk four birdies on the back nine to post a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday. Senior Jodee Tindal sandwiched a stellar 71 in Round 2 with a pair of 75s to place T-51. Additionally, sophomore Emily Dunlap battled back to move up 10 spots in the final round with a 73 to finish T-66.
