Pat Kelsey earned his 200
th career win on Monday night as the Charleston Men's Basketball squad held off Drexel, 79-75, at TD Arena. The Cougars improved to 14-10 overall and 6-6 in league action with the victory. CofC has won five of its last seven games since Jan. 25.
Led by sophomore
Nick Farrar's 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, Charleston's bench was phenomenal, outpacing Drexel's reserves 37-14. CofC's bench has now outscored opponents' reserves by a combined 88 points over the last four games. Freshman
Babacar Faye helped fuel that effort with nine points on 3-of-4 FGs.
Senior
John Meeks racked up 13 points, five assists and four rebounds in 33 efficient minutes. CofC finished with 14 assists on just 12 turnovers as a group. The Cougars outrebounded Drexel by 13, paced by 13 offensive boards.
The tight matchup featured a game of runs as the Dragons took an early lead out of the gate and held a 22-17 advantage 13 minutes into the game with stifling defense. That's when Farrar and the Cougars found their groove, ripping off a torrid 20-4 run to close the half. Farrar scored eight consecutive points during a key stretch as CofC extended its lead before the break.
Drexel got right back in it early in the second frame with a run of its own and cut the deficit down to two within five minutes. The Dragons just couldn't quite get over the hump as CofC never trailed throughout the final half. CofC clung to the lead until Meeks and Farrar sparked a vital spurt with four minutes remaining. After back-to-back Meeks jumpers, Farrar splashed a 3-pointer to push Charleston in front by 10.
The Dragons would go on to fight back to within one possession, but CofC sealed Kelsey's 200
th career win with clutch late free throws.

- Thirteen of CofC's 24 games this season have been decided by single digits, with the Cougars winning eight of those contests.
