ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2022 UCF Challenge from Feb. 6-8 in Orlando featured a field of 18 teams, with nine of the 18 ranked in the Top-46 nationally. CofC Women's Golf was up to the task and more, finishing fourth of 18 with a school record 19-under-par 845. The Cougars beat six nationally-ranked teams in the process, including No. 12 Auburn and No. 22 UCF, and finished behind three opponents all in Golfstat's Top-34.
CofC now has four straight Top-4 finishes as a team since placing second at the Evie Odom Invitational in early October, continuing their momentum at the spring season opener. The Cougars fired a program-record to par -12 (276) as a group in the second round and followed with a 7-under 281 in the final round that spanned two days to post the historic 845.
"What a great tournament for the team," head coach Jamie Futrell said. "I am very proud of them. They have worked hard to get to this level. It is nice to see all their hard work pay off."
Charleston was paced by a trio of Cougars who finished in the Top-20 individually. Freshman Mary Kathryn Talledo put together the best tournament of her young career, finishing T-13 with a career-low 6-under 210. Talledo followed a career-best 67 in Round 2 by polishing off a 3-under 69 on Tuesday.
Hund matched Talledo at T-13 with three strong rounds in a row. Hund shot a 71 on Sunday, a 70 on Monday and finished up a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to cement a 6-under 210. She has now posted four consecutive Top-25 finishes.
Freshman Emma Schimpf earned her fourth straight Top-20 performance, finishing T-19 at 5-under for the tournament. Schimpf now has 10 rounds of par or better in 18 career rounds after racking up three more this week in Orlando.
Senior Jodee Tindal bounced back from a 77 in the opening round to fire a 73 on Monday and card a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. She moved up 16 spots on the leaderboard to T-69 over the final round of action. Sophomore Smith Knaffle also placed T-69, anchored by a season-best 2-under 70 in Round 2.
CofC continues its campaign Feb. 27-28 at the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Arizona.
