JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team returns to the Lowcountry this week for its fourth and final home tournament of the 2021-22 campaign. Head coach Jamie Futrell and the Cougars are hosting the 2022 Briar's Creek Invitational from March 14-15 at the Par-72, 6,166-yard Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island.
CofC is coming off a T-8 finish at the Westbrook Invitational in Arizona, paced by three-time CAA Golfer of the Week Viktoria Hund, who finished third out of 81 competitors. The Cougars will face off against 17 other teams at the two-day Briar's Creek Invitational. Action tees off with 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday. Monday's rounds begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET.
"This is the third leg of the gauntlet as I have been calling our schedule this spring," Futrell said. "We have had a successful start to the spring and now get to defend our championship at Briar's. The team is playing well and will need to against another great field this week I appreciate the support that the Briar's Creek members have given to this tournament. It truly is a special event because of their generosity."
This mark's the ninth edition of Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by College of Charleston. The Cougars won last year's event by one stroke over Miami (FL), with Hund capturing medalist honors. The 18-team field at this year's event includes 11 programs from Power 5 conference and three programs ranked in the nation's Top 30 (No. 11 Michigan, No. 26 Illinois and No. 28 UCF).
CofC comes in at No. 64 nationally, the highest of any CAA team, and boasts the 16th-best team stroke average in the country at 288.05. The Cougars have four Top-4 team finishes this season already, highlight by a tournament victory at the Edisto Island Invitational in October, also hosted by CofC. Hund will lead Futrell's lineup once again, riding a four-tournament streak of Top-13 individual finishes. She enters the Briar's Creek Invite having carded seven consecutive rounds of par or better.
Emma Schimpf is in the second spot, making her seventh straight start for the Cougars. She is seeking her fourth Top-10 performance in eight career tournaments. Fellow freshman Mary Kathryn Talledo is in third position in CofC's lineup. She's been solid all season, boasting a 72.78 scoring average.
Rounding out the Cougars' lineup at Briar's is Jodee Tindal and Othilie Lied. Three of Tindal's six rounds this spring have been a 73 or better. Meanwhile, Lied earns her first start since the season-opening tournament in September after finishing T-37 at the Westbrook Invitational, highlighted by a season-best 71 in the second round.
The remaining four Cougars on the 2021-22 roster – Emily Dunlap, Smith Knaffle, Kirsty Brodie and Isabella Britt, will all be competing this week as individuals.
