CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston travels to the Old Dominion on Friday to compete in the CAA Cross Country Championships.
The women's 6k race begins at 10 a.m. followed by the men's 8k at 11 a.m. The event is being held at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va.
Rhian Purves has paced the Cougar women in all five meets this fall. The graduate student will look to improve on her top 6k time of 21:23.6 that ranks her fifth in school history.
Freshman Mitchel Drees has enjoyed a standout first season, leading the Cougar men in each race including a 25:33.6 time in the 8k at the Upstate Invitational two weeks ago that has him tied for seventh in the record book.
"Our teams are ready to take on the challenge of a conference championship race," said interim head coach Chris Bailey. "The course and conditions play to our strengths. We look forward to showing what we've been building toward all season."
The women have finished in the top four in four meets this fall, with Savannah Stoutt, Sophia Brown and Maeve Gimbert joining Purves as consistent scorers. The men have also been among the upper echelon teams in the majority of their races, including a ninth-place finish at the Royals Challenge.
Freshmen have played a large part in the team's success, with Ben Ashmore, Rob DiMedio and Roger Brown joining veteran Jackson Reid as the leading runners.
