Busy Home Week Begins with Cougar Classic at Patriots Point

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston begins a busy slate of seven games in five days with the Cougar Classic starting Friday at Patriots Point.

The Cougars open against Boston University on Friday at 3 p.m. and play Canisius immediately following. The Terriers and Tennessee Tech are the opponents on Saturday at the same time, and a second game with Tennessee Tech wraps up the three-day tournament on Sunday at noon.

Admission will be charged when the box office opens on Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youths.

After a day off, Charleston plays Canisius again in a doubleheader on Tuesday at noon. The Saturday and Sunday tournament games and the twinbill against the Griffs will be streamed on Flosports.

Boston University is the defending Patriot League regular season champions, finishing 40-17 a year ago, and Canisius won 32 games and captured the MAAC regular season and tournament titles.

The Cougars opened their season with an 8-0 loss at South Carolina on Wednesday with fresh-man Caroline Conner, the second of three pitchers, allowing only two hits and two runs in 3.1 innings. 

Boston University 
The Terriers won three of four at the USF-Rawlings Invitational in Tampa last weekend with the lone loss being to No. 4 Florida. Kayla Roncin paced BU at the plate, going 6-for-12 with a homer, four runs scored and three RBI. Emily Gant also had six hits and knocked in four. Kacey Ricard tossed a shutout against the host Bulls and struck out 12 in 8.2 innings overall.

Canisius
The Griffs open their season this weekend. Canisius returns four players who batted over .300 last year, led by Saige Alfaro (.376), Christie McGee-Ross (.359, 23 SB) and Gianna Fazzolari (.306, 8 HR, 38 RBI). Megan Giese heads the pitching staff, winning 14 games with a 1.98 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 159 innings in 2022.

Tennessee Tech
The Golden Eagles played two of five scheduled games last weekend at the Stinger Classic in Montgomery, Ala., losing to Western Carolina and Kennesaw State. Haeli Bryson drove in three of their five runs with a pair of base hits. Kaylan Cole tossed seven innings and did not allow an earned run in a 1-0 loss to the Catamounts.
