CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston cross country teams make their annual trip up I-26 on Friday for their season opener at the Buccaneer Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern.
The women's 5k race begins at 9 a.m. followed by the men's 6k at 9:45.
The Cougar women return a pair of runners who finished in the top 30 at the CAA Championships last fall, including Savannah Stoutt and Sophia Brown, while Cayden Crismon, Andie Harding and Sydney Peer also competed at the conference meet.
Brown enters her senior season ranked 10th in school history at the 5k distance with a time of 18:00.63 posted at the Firetower Project in Boone, N.C., in 2022.
Charleston also has five newcomers on its roster with freshmen Alyssa Boucher, Bella Hudson, Abby Mogg, Lauren Resnick and Aine Trapp joining the program.
"We graduated a strong group of women who elevated our program in many ways," said head coach Chris Bailey. "This season we are excited to welcome five newcomers who are poised to leave their own mark. The future is bright for this group."
Four men who scored at the CAA Championships last year return, a group headed by graduate student Jackson Reid followed by Tucker Green, Ben Ashmore and Rob DiMedio.
A large group of six new runners are on the roster including transfer Nathan Hallar and sophomore Kyle Nitsche, who joined the team following the 2023 season. Freshmen Justin Bevacqua, Andrew Catapano, Connor Forche and Finn Myatt are also new this year.
"Our newcomers will be aiming to make an immediate impact after already integrating with our group of returners," said Bailey. "This is the largest men's roster (15 athletes) we have had in over a decade, and I look forward to seeing what they achieve with positive momentum and culture."
