WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (5-8-3, 2-3-2) earned a crucial 3-1 win over William & Mary (2-9-4, 1-5-1) at Albert-Daly Field Saturday afternoon to keep its postseason hopes alive.
In the Cougars' second win over the Tribe this year,
Lennon Gill netted his third goal of the year,
Stian Bendvold scored for the second time this season and
Julian Jordheim found the back of the net for his first goal of the 2025 campaign.
In goal,
Jourdan Schumacher tied a season-high with six saves in the contest.
RECAP – Applying immediate pressure, Charleston took its first shot of the game just over a minute into the match and earned a corner right after. Not taking their foot off the gas, the Cougars took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute as
Noah Gold sent a bicycle kick into the box where Gill found the back of the net with a bicycle kick of his own.
After the opening goal, the teams battled for possession until the Tribe had a 1-on-1 opportunity in the final minutes of the opening stanza. With no one between the attacker and himself, Schumacher came up with a big save to keep CofC in front 1-0 at the break.
Both teams took five shots and had one shot on goal in the first half.
The Tribe opened the second frame with four quick shots, but came up empty as Schumacher collected his second save of the game on the last of the four attempts. After neutralizing a William & Mary corner kick, Charleston was off to the races on a counterattack where Bendvold found himself in the open field with one man to beat. Bendvold then made a shifty move to lose the defender and sent the ball into the back of the net with a beautiful left-footed strike to put CofC up 2-0 in the 55th minute.
Charleston then added another goal in the 80th minute as
Ezra White found Jordheim who flicked the ball into the net to make it a 3-0 game.
William & Mary scored in the 85th minute to avoid being shutout as Charleston won Saturday's contest 3-1 to stay in the postseason hunt.
CAA TOURNAMENT — The top three teams from each division in the conference will earn a spot in the CAA Tournament and the right to play for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
With one game remaining on the schedule for Charleston, the Cougars currently sit in fourth place in the South Division and are just one point behind UNCW for the third and final spot in the postseason. UNCW plays Wednesday and will clinch a playoff spot and eliminate Charleston with a win. However, with a Seahawks loss or tie, the Cougars will control their own destiny with a matchup against the Seahawks next Saturday night.
