Cougars Outlast Terriers

MT PLEASANT, S.C. – Senior Dylan Johnson threw out the would-be tying run at second to give College of Charleston baseball a 9-8 win over Wofford Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
 
The Cougars become the first CAA school to 10 victories as the team improves to 10-5. With the loss, Wofford slips to 12-5.
 
Graduate Mike Eggert earned the win against his former team in his first appearance of the season, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames while striking out the last two batters he faced.

   
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST WOFFORD:
  • With two outs in the second, Charleston 7-, 8- and 9-hole batters recorded knocks, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
  • After giving up three runs in the top of the third, CofC put a six-spot in the scoreboard, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of graduate Will Baumhofer.
  • Up 8-6 in the seventh, Charleston plated the would-be game-winning run on a Wofford balk.
  • The Terriers tallied a two-run double in the eighth to make it a one-run game, but Charleston closer Davis Aiken came in to shut the door, earning the four out save.
  • Baumhofer and senior Dariyan Pendergrass both recorded two-hit games.
  • Pendergrass also recorded a career-high three RBI and tied his career best with three swiped bags.
 
OF NOTE:
  • Charleston improves to 41-12 against Wofford all time and 22-5 at home.
  • The Cougars pitching staff tied their season-high with 11 strikeouts in the win.
  • CofC worked nine walks Tuesday, giving them 89 free passes in 15 games.
  • Charleston has drawn five-or-more walks in 11 of the 15 games.
  • Redshirt freshman Kevin Samonsky made his first career start, throwing 2.2 innings.
  • All nine Charleston batters had a hit on Tuesday.
  • Graduate Avery Neaves worked a team-best three walks, adding to his Charleston-high 16.
  • Charleston improves to 90-15 when scoring six-or-more runs under head coach Chad Holbrook.
  • The Cougars also improve to 205-12 under Holbrook when leading after eight innings.

Charleston faces Dartmouth for the first time in program history when it hosts the Big Green for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 14. First pitches at Patriots Point are scheduled for 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. with the games airing live on FloCollege.
