Matt Burns is in his first season as an assistant coach at College of Charleston and will work with the Cougar hitters and infielders as well as serving as recruiting coordinator.
Burns was at Longwood in 2021 after a three-year stint at Bucknell (2018-20) where he developed one of the top offenses in the Patriot League. The Bison set a school record for home runs in a season with 36 in 2018 and produced a trio of All-Patriot League performers in Allyse Volpe, Lauren Hadley and Jess Hom.
In addition to his on-field responsibilities, Burns was the team’s recruiting coordinator his first two years before taking over as acting head coach during the shortened 2020 season. Bucknell finished second in the Patriot League in both 2018 and 2019, winning 55 games with a 27-8 conference record.
Burns began his career as a baseball coach, serving as an assistant at Bard College in 2013 and SUNY New Paltz in 2014 before getting his first Division I job as a volunteer assistant at Akron in 2015. The following year he transitioned to softball in the first of two seasons at Skidmore.
While with the Thoroughbreds, Burns mentored four players who earned spots on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region team, a quartet that included Dani DiGregory, who became the school’s first-ever All-American. Skidmore reached the Liberty League playoffs both seasons with Burns on the staff.
His first coaching position was as an assistant with the Watertown Wizards in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in the summer of 2012. Burns graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh and was a member of the baseball team from 2006-10. He also holds a Master of Science for teacher’s degree.
Burns and his wife, Danielle, are the parents of a son, Derek.
