After Sarah Moye tied the game with two free throws with 25 seconds remaining Georgia Southern drew a foul with five seconds to go and iced two free throws of its own to take the eventual 52-50 win in women's basketball action on senior day in front of 406 fans at the John Kresse Arena.
The Cougars drop their ninth straight to end the regular season at 10-19 overall and 5-13 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern goes to 12-17 and 7-11 in the league. Seniors Melissa Chambers and Christina Williams were honored prior to the game.
Georgia Southern led by four with 1:29 left before a layup by Jill Furstenburg and Moye's free throws tied the game at 50-50. The Eagles went the length of the floor attempted the potential game-winner, but a Cougar foul put Tiffany Brown on the line with five seconds to go. She calmly connected on both to put GSU up 52-50. Charleston had an opportunity to tie or win but a turnover in the closing second ended the chance.
Charleston, after shooting 47.4 from the field in the first half, shot 33.3 percent in the second to end the game with a 39.5 shooting percentage. Georgia Southern remained consistent, firing a 33.3 field goal percentage in each half to end the game with that. Both teams had 35 rebounds, while Charleston had the 27-21 advantage in turnovers. Turnovers proved to be a key in the game as the Eagles scored 27 points of the CofC miscues. Charleston only scored 13 off the Eagles' turnovers.
Furstenburg led the Cougars with 15 points, while Chambers followed with 12. For the fourth time in five games Moye led the team in rebounds with her 10 on the day.
Tiffany Brown led the Eagles with 17 points off a three-for-five day from beyond the three-point arc. Chequilla Jessie had a double-double with her 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Both the Cougars and Eagles await word on seeding for times and dates of the Southern Conference Tournament, which starts Tuesday, Feb. 27th.
