MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Wofford in the team's regular season Southern Conference finale at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, the Cougars end the regular year with a 9-9-0 overall mark, 3-4-0 in Southern Conference, while Wofford ends the year posting a 6-12-0 record, 2-5-0 in the SoCon.
In the first half, Wofford attacked the net right from the start of the match, as the Terriers recorded five shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of the match. Each shot, however, was knocked out of the goal by Cougar keeper Clark Hankins, who recorded a save on each attempt.
Wofford finally broke through in the 40th minute when Phillips Leach scored his first goal of the season to make the score 1-0 going into the half. Leach tallied the goal after receiving the ball in front of the net after it was deflected by a Charleston defender.
In the second half, momentum changed sides, as the Cougars were the aggressors on offense. Overall, they took six shots in the period, as opposed to Wofford's one shot.
Charleston, however, could not score in the period, despite having numerous chances to do so. The Cougars had one last attempt to score with two minutes remaining after Wes Knight took a free kick from the top of the box. Knight's shot was saved by Wofford goalie Thomas Hunter, thus ending the Cougar's final threat to score in the match.
Overall, both Wofford and the Cougars took nine shot apiece on the night. Hankins made five saves in goal, while Hunter made four saves to preserve a shutout victory.
The Cougars will now enter the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championships as the #5 seed. Charleston will go on the road to Appalachian State on Saturday, Nov. 8th for their first round match. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
