ELON, N.C. ? The College of Charleston women's tennis team won the 2009 Southern Conference Championship with a 4-1 victory over top-seeded Furman in the finals of the SoCon Championships on Sunday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
"Our girls layed it all on the line today and left everything out on the court," said Cougar coach Angelo Anastopoulo. " They have battled through injuries all season and still managed to rise up to the occasion ever time this season. Today they played the hardest I've ever seen them play.
"Anythime you can beat a team like Furman it is special. They are an oustanding team. They have dominated the league year in and year out. We knew going into the tournament that we needed to play better at doubles. During the regular season we were 0-3 at the doubles point against the teams we played in the tournament. We went 3-0 this weekend and that gave the girls a tremendous boost going into the singles."
With the win, the Cougars improved to 24-4 on the year, won their first conference championship since 2003 and secured the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The 24 wins represent the most by a Charleston team since earning NCAA Division I status in 1991-92. Furman ends their season with a 17-8 record.
The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on ESPNU beginning at 5:20 p.m on Tuesday, April 28.
"We are proud to bring another title to CofC and look forward to proudly representing the socon in the NCAAs," added Anastopoulo.
In doubles play, both Furman and Charleston split matches in the number one and three spots. In the number two position, the team of Kinsey Casey and Keely Mulligan earned a hard-fought 9-8 victory over the team of Lauren Tomory and Jennifer Betts to capture a team point for the Cougars.
After Furman won the first match in singles play, Charleston swept matches in the number four, six and two positions to get to the four points needed to clinch the conference championship.
At number six singles, Casey was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Betts, while in the fourth position, Anna Lee Evans was a 6-1, 6-4 victor over Susan Bitetti. At number two singles, Holly Dowse won the contest for the Cougars with a three set (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) triumph over Monica Arguello.
