
Women?s Basketball Travels to Samford, Chattanooga

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's basketball team makes a long road trip this weekend as they play Samford (Saturday Jan. 29, 3p.m.) and battle Chattanooga (Monday Jan. 31, 7p.m.).
Scouting the Competition
Samford enter the contest having won their last two games against Chattanooga and Western Carolina. The Bulldogs (14-6, 7-4) have posted a 9-1 overall record at home, with their only loss coming against Elon (42-47). Samford is led on offense by Emily London, who is averaging 15.1 points per game, which ranks her sixth in the Southern Conference in scoring. Samford is first in the SoCon in scoring defense, giving up 56.1 points per game, while CofC is third at 60.9 points per game.
After two consecutive games in the loss column the Chattanooga Mocs (9-11, 6-5) rebounded against Western Carolina on Jan. 22 with a 71-55 victory. The Lady Mocs are led in scoring by Whitney Hood, who also leads the conference in scoring average at 21.3 points per game. Chattanooga is third in the conference in scoring offense at 66.0 points per game, but 10th in scoring defense at 70.2 points per game.
Last Time vs. Opponent
On Dec. 18 the Cougars hosted the Bulldogs and although they were within one at halftime they could not keep up as Samford extended its lead and picked up a 53-62 victory over CofC. In the Cougars 56-50 win over Chattanooga on Dec. 16 Alyssa Frye scored a career-high 12 points, including 10 in the first half, while Janae Smith posted a team-leading 16 points, including 10 in the second half, to lead the Cougars to the first ever back-to-back wins over Chattanooga since the 2001 season.
300 Earned in Battle vs. Paladins
College of Charleston Head Coach Nancy Wilson picked up her 300th victory at the helm of the Cougars with a 56-50 victory over Furman Jan. 24. Wilson has posted a coaching record of 300-188 at CofC and 531-336 overall.
Gerty Dishing Them Out
Known for her scoring, senior Tonia Gerty recently set the CofC Division I assist record as she collected six takeaways against Elon on Jan. 22. Gerty now has 421 steals for her career.
