CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The College of Charleston won a 3-1 match victory over the Chattanooga Mocs in SoCon volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars won 25-15, 18-25, 28-26 and 25-23. The win helped College of Charleston improve to 15-9 on the season and 6-2 in the SoCon. The Mocs fell to 4-17 and 2-5 in conference play.
Four different players reached double figures in kills for the Cougars as the team hit .303 on the match. Sophomore Kerstin Koehler recorded a career-high 10 kills while senior Sarah Havel led with 14 kills and six blocks. Elyse Chubb recorded 12 kills and Sloane White landed 11.
Sophomore Taeler Davis topped her previous-best output by making 52 assists. Redshirt-junior Emily Shelton made an impressive 31 digs, including several in late-game situations, just one from her career high.
"I thought we made a great recovery from yesterday's match," head coach Jason Kepner said. "We played really hard, and they gave us all we could handle. We were very fortunate to win two close games at the end. Emily Shelton made several game-saving digs at the end and really stepped up for us defensively."
Chattanooga was led by Kasey Talley's 16 kills, while Jennifer Kuroski and Christina Teter each made 14 kills. The Mocs hit .244 for the match and made 70 team digs.
College of Charleston never trailed in the first set, as the Cougars broke open a 10-8 set to go up 14-9 on the kill from Koehler. The Cougars continued energetic play throughout the set, while taking advantage of five Chattanooga attacking errors and four service errors to win 25-15. Koehler was the team leader in kills with five, while the entire team hit .483 with just one error. The Cougars recorded six more digs than the Mocs (18-12), and sided out on 15 of 16 opportunities, keeping the Mocs from making extended runs.
Chattanooga broke open an 11-11 contest with a 4-0 run and then a 3-0 run to go up 18-14. The Cougars rallied to make it 18-17 after a kill from Chubb and two kills from Davis. However, three straight Cougar errors followed by two aces sandwiching a kill from Chattanooga's Jennifer Kuroski gave the Mocs set point at 24-17, a six-point run. A kill from Chubb was not enough late as Chattanooga won the set, 25-18.
The Cougars and Mocs went through a ferocious battle in the third set, filled with big runs for both teams and dramatic points late. Chattanooga jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead, but the Cougars came right back to make it 10-8 on kills from Davis, Havel and Koehler. The teams traded points through the middle of the set before College of Charleston ran to a 22-19 lead off of consecutive blocks from Havel. But the Mocs came right back and tied it at 22 and the teams continued trading points past 25. A block error from Chattanooga's Bridget Camacho gave the Cougars a 27-26 advantage and a Lizzie Theesfeld service ace ended the set with a 28-26 Cougar victory.
The fourth set was back and forth as neither team could build a significant lead. With the set tied at 21, Chattanooga won the next two points to go up 23-21. However, a kill from Davis, a block from Havel and Koehler followed by kills from Havel gave the Cougars 25-23 set victory. The Cougars hit .333 in the third to win the match, 3-1.
College of Charleston hosts Appalachian State and Western Carolina at home next weekend.
