CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball finishes tournament action with the Steve Baumrind Invitational Sept. 12-14, presented by Hampton Inn & Suites West Ashley. The Cougars host Youngstown State, Quinnipiac and Stetson in TD Arena during the weekend slate. 
 
 
WEEKEND SCHEDULE:
  • Friday, Sept. 12: vs. Youngstown State at 6 p.m. 
  • Saturday, Sept. 13: vs. Quinnipiac at 6 p.m. 
  • Sunday, Sept. 14: vs. Stetson at 2 p.m.
 
OPENING SERVE:
  • Charleston beat The Citadel Monday evening, 3-1, improving to 33-2 all time versus the Bulldogs.
  • CofC set a program record with 14 service aces in the four-set match.
  • Freshman Julia Gnida had five of the aces, the second Cougar this season with five aces in a contest.
  • Graduate student Izzy Marinelli recorded 14 kills in the win, hitting .452. For the season, the right side has 73 kills and a .304 attacking percentage.
  • Freshman JuJu Martin leads the Coastal Athletic Association and is seventh nationally with 139 digs. CofC's 436 digs is good for 12th in the country.
  • Martin also has at least one service ace in all seven matches and two in each of the last three contests.
  • Junior Lauren Dow's 229 assists is best in the CAA and 28th in the nation while the Cougars' 333 assists rank 17th among Division I schools.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
  • Youngstown State enters the weekend with a 4-2 record, having taken two of three matches in their first two tournaments. Abbie Householder has 83 kills for the Penguins and Niyah Lester leads the defense with 22.0 blocks.
  • Quinnipiac holds a 2-4 record to begin 2025, beating Stonehill in their last match, 3-1. Elena Giacomini has 92 kills and 63 digs for the Bobcats.
  • Stetson has lost five straight matches are beginning the campaign with a five set with against Northern Illinois. Zuzanna Bury averages four points per set and 3.32 kills per set for the Hatters.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
  • The Cougars play the Penguins for the second time in program history after first meeting Sept. 5, 2009, in a neutral site contest in Cincinnati. 
  • CofC is 1-0 against Quinnipiac after sweeping the Bobcats in Pullman, Wash., on Aug. 31, 2017.
  • Charleston is 17-5 in the series with Stetson with 10 of the victories coming at home. The teams meet for the first time since Sept. 2, 2023.
 
UP NEXT:
  • CofC looks to defend the CAA Championship when it opens conference play at Towson Sept. 20 and 21. Opening serves are set for noon with the matches airing live on FloCollege.
