College of Charleston Sweeps Davidson, 3-0

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston captured its fourth match sweep of the season, and second in SoCon play, by defeating Davidson, 3-0, in volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at TD Arena.

College of Charleston (13-7, 4-0) won its second straight match against a SoCon South Division opponent, moving to a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

The Cougars were led by senior Sarah Havel who hit a team-best .500 while tying for the team high in kills with 12. Havel also tallied five total blocks, including two solo, as the team registered 12 blocks on the match, the second-most this season. Freshman Sloane White continued her strong play, reaching double figures in kills for the ninth time this season, and the seventh time in the last eight matches, as she hit 12. Redshirt-junior Emily Shelton made 21 digs.

The Wildcats (12-5, 2-2) used 14 kills and 12 digs from Caroline Brown but were unable to overcome the Cougars attack. Madison Benedict led the team with six total blocks.

College of Charleston led most of the way through the first set, maintaining a four- or five-point lead after going up 11-7. The Wildcats could not pull closer than three points late and College of Charleston won 25-21. Havel hit a perfect 3-for-3 on attack while Elyse Chubb made four kills and five total blocks in the set.

Davidson held a slight lead through the beginning of the second set before College of Charleston tied it at 10. Both teams traded points for the rest of the set until the Cougars scored three straight points, including two kills from Havel, to take a 23-19 lead. CofC eventually won the second set, 25-22. Havel finished with a team-best six kills in the second set.

The third set continued similarly to the second with both teams locked up to an 11-11 tie. The Cougars scored four of the next five points and established a lead they never relinquished. Davidson pulled to within 21-19, but a kill and block from Kelly Kolich kept the Cougars ahead and Charleston pulled out the set, 25-19.

College of Charleston hits the road next week to face Furman on Friday, Oct. 7, followed by Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 8.
