MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team defeated Furman, 5-2, to remain perfect in Southern Conference action held Saturday afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (15-7, 7-0) won their eighth-straight dual match by securing the doubles point early and on the wings of senior leadership in singles versus the Paladins (9-10, 6-2). CofC is one of two frontrunners in the SoCon regular-season title race with UNC Greensboro (12-4, 7-0), a squad they will face tomorrow in an important home duel beginning at 11 a.m. (ET).
"Coach (Jeff) Trivette has done a great job of recruiting and has a very talented team," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We will have to be at our very best to win tomorrow."
Senior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga.) and junior Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia) claimed their sixth-straight victory by a close 9-8 count over Furman's Amanda Murray and Michele Stanford at the No. 2 line to give CofC the 1-0 edge leading into singles play. Senior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) and sophomore Irene Viana (Paris, France) set up the doubles point by easily dispatching the top tandem of Margaret Boyette and Lauren Kline, 8-2, at No. 1.
"That was a real momentum boost," Anastopoulo said. "We had some leads there that we let slip away. I thought, quite frankly, the nerves got to us. But, we were able deal with them in a positive way in the end."
Freshman Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.), Hayman and senior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla.) quickly took care of business winning the three remaining points needed to clinch the match. The trio beat the Paladins in straight sets allowing only 12 games combined at the No. 5, No. 2 and No. 6 lines.
"It was great to quickly pick up those three necessary singles wins, because there was some grumbling with some thunder in the area," Anastopoulo said. "The rule is, if you do not make up a match within 48 hours, you have to start all over. We were fortunate to close it out like we did. We credit our win today to our senior leadership. They have instilled a great work ethic into our team and have taught their teammates how to be very competitive on the court. It was another great Furman-College of Charleston rivalry match that could have went either way. We were lucky to win it today."
CofC will host the Spartans on Senior Day at Patriots Point. Live scoring will be available online at www.CofCSports.com or by CLICKING HERE.
"It will be a great day to honor our seniors," Anastopoulo said. "I will certainly miss them. They have meant so much to our program. They have put us in a position to still be in contention to win a regular-season conference championship. They have not only been great student-athletes, but flat-out great people to be around. There is never a dull moment with Keely, Kinsey and Emma. We are looking forward to seeing them succeed and move on to the next part of their lives after college."
