CofC Sweeps Slovenians In International Friendly

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite a close first set, the College of Charleston pulled away from the Slovenian Junior National Team in an international exhibition at TD Arena, winning 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-12).

The Cougars were efficient offensively, hitting at a clip of .389 for the match, while holding Slovenia to a hitting mark of .115.

Junior Darcy Dorton made a match-high 11 kills while Kerstin Koehler landed nine kills and made six blocks for CofC. Sloane White hit an efficient .500 with eight kills and four blocks. Kallie McKown set 31 assists in the starting setting role for the entire match.

Slovenia was paced by Nina Petranovic's seven kills and six kills from Urska Iglicar. No player tallied more than five digs for Slovenia.

The first was tight until the end when the Cougars went on a 4-1 run to break a tie at 18 and lead 22-19 after an Emily Neideffer kill. Two kills from Dorton and an exclamation point from Koehler ended the set with the Cougars on top 25-20.

College of Charleston hit .375 in the second set with an impressive performance from White who made four kills on five attempts. CofC opened the set up with a 6-0 run to break a tie at eight. The Cougars eventually led 19-10 after a White service ace. The Slovenians took advantage of a few Cougar errors to bring it to 20-13, but the Cougars closed out the set with a McKown ace and Koehler kill, winning 25-15.

The home team wasted no time in putting away Slovenia in the third set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead after a Neideffer kill. Despite trading points and siding out, the Slovenians could not climb back, eventually trailing 20-10 and losing 25-12. Freshman Grace Rebarchak made kills in the final two points to give CofC the match victory.

College of Charleston plays Memphis in the final match of the Courtyard Charleston North Classic tonight, with the tournament title on the line after Memphis knocked off UNF this morning. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
