Women's Tennis Gains Valuable Experience at ITA Regional Championships

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team dropped three well-fought matches on Friday against some of the nations' top talent at the ITA Regional Championships.
Hosted by the University of North Carolina, the ITA Regional Championships annually feature the best student-athletes and tennis programs in the Southeast.
"This was a great experience for us," said College of Charleston Director of Tennis, Angelo Anastopoulo. "It's great to be able to have the opportunity to play against the best players in the country. As a group, we held our own, learned a lot and this kind of top-level competition will help prepare us for what will be a very challenging Spring schedule."
In the first match of the day, Greensboro, N.C., native Brook McAmis took to the court against Joelle Kissell of North Carolina State, eventually falling to the two-time All-ACC nominee 6-1, 6-2. Next up for the Cougars was freshman Mara Argyriou, who took on fifth-seeded Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson. Argyriou, a Cypriot from Limassol, was unable to topple the highly-touted, first-team all-ACC Gumulya, losing 6-, 6-3 to the former top-20 junior player. In the final match of the day, Samantha Maddox, a junior from Lexington, Ky., was ousted 6-3, 6-4 by Meghan Blevins of the University of South Carolina.
Up next for women's tennis is the College of Charleston Halloween Challenge, Nov. 1 -3, at the College of Charleston Tennis Center on Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
"We are very pleased to have some very talented teams coming to Charleston for the Halloween Challenge," said Anastopoulo. "Georgia, Denver and NC State are perennial powers and we'll need to play well to get some positive results."
