ATLANTA – College of Charleston followed up a dramatic match win over Chattanooga by coasting to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) sweep over Florida A&M in the second contest of the day for the Cougars in the Georgia Tech Invitational.
Charleston (2-0) took the win in just over an hour and 10 minutes, holding FAMU (0-2) to an .086 overall hitting percentage. Every player on the roster saw action in the match with reserves and younger players making plays to the delight of their veteran counterparts.
Cara Howley led the team again in hitting percentage (.353) while also tying for the team high with nine kills. Darcy Dorton and Sloane White also landed nine kills in the win. Melissa Morello finished with six kills and eight digs, and Andi Zbojniewicz finished with a team-high 18 digs.
Sophomore
Grace Rebarchak totaled a career-high four blocks to go with three kills.
Maddie Hills recorded her first career stats with a three-kill effort and two blocks.
FAMU was led by Yeisha Arcia who finished with eight kills. Ginna Lopez-Chavez added six kills and four blocks.
“I was pleased with how we finished the day,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “You always want to start the season 2-0, and we played very well in our second match against Florida A&M. Whenever you can get everyone on the roster some playing time, you are happy with your efforts.”
CofC opened up the first set with an early 4-0 run that included an ace from White and solo block from Neideffer, making it 9-4. Another run was capped off by a block from Rebarchak and Morello and an ace from McKown to make it 14-5, Cougar advantage. FAMU strung some points together late to make the Cougars work at 21-17, but Rattler errors were their undoing and Morello ended the set with a kill, 25-19.
The Cougar bench got to see action in the second set as Catey Warren, Kari Fidelholtz, Ashley Watson and Lexi Rhein all made plays on the court to their teammates' joy. Rebarchak tallied two solo blocks and two kills to help the Cougars open a 14-7 lead. Florida A&M never crept closer than six points for the rest of the set as CofC cruised to a 25-17 set victory.
Charleston built a 10-3 lead in the third set after three straight FAMU errors. Charleston was able to side out efficiently throughout the middle points and the Rattlers trailed 21-13 late in the game. White tallied two kills and a block to end the set and give the Cougars a 25-19 set win.
