CHARLESTON, S.C. – The newly christened No. 64-ranked College of Charleston men's tennis team, riding its second highest ranking in school history, continued its fast start to life in the Colonial Athletic Association, downing Hofstra on Tuesday, 7-0, at the CofC Tennis Complex at Patriots Point.
“We had to deal with some weather during the match today,” said CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner. “But I think we focused well. We are getting tougher and tougher each match and will be ready for the upcoming weekend in Virginia.”
The Cougars (10-4) – just four days removed from a great win over then No. 57-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes– pounced on the Pride early and often on Tuesday, battling through cold weather and windy conditions to take two of three doubles flights. The Chilean duo of Rodrigo Encinas and Crescente Lesser defeated Beau Willis and Joseph Erichson, 8-1 on court 2, while Alon Faiman and Josh Record also claimed victory on court three, 8-2, over Mathew Gemmel and Leo Pires to give CofC the doubles point.
In singles, the Cougars ran rampant, taking all six matches in straight sets to secure their tenth win of the season. Winning in singles for the Cougars was Brice Allanic, Encinas, Lesser, Ghriskey, CAA men's tennis Player of the Week Zack Lewis and Alon Faiman.
The College has now won seven of their last eight matches, securing an ITA-ranking only surpassed by the 2006-07 edition of men's tennis who, under then head coach Phil Whitesell, climbed as high as No. 57 before falling to Elon in the Southern Conference tournament final.
Next up for CofC is a Sunday, Mar. 23, away double header with Hampton and Christopher Newport, where doubles play is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
