RIVERSIDE, CA. – It was a banner day for the College of Charleston men's tennis team, who cracked the ITA top-75 national rankings for the first time this season, before dispatching of the University of California, Riverside, 7-0, in the opening leg of their two-match west coast road swing.
The newly-minted No. 71-ranked Cougars (5-3) were strong from the outset, quickly claiming the doubles point courtesy of victories on courts one and three by the Cougar pairings of Brice Allanic/Charlie Ghriskey and Crescente Lesser/Rodrigo Encinas.
In singles play, The College lost only one set – on court six – while Allanic, Encinas, Lesser, Ghriskey and Zack Lewis all ran away with straight-set victories to give the Cougars their fourth road win of the season.
“This was a good start to our spring break in California,” said College of Charleston men's head tennis coach Jay Bruner. “The team competed well today. We played smart doubles and showed energy for the whole match. We will need that same kind of energy tomorrow as we get ready to take on a good LMU (Loyola Marymount University) team. Being ranked top-75 in the nation is awesome and gives us a good mark to begin from the rest of the season. March and April determine the character of your team – so we will push ourselves now to work even harder.”
Next up for The College are the Lions of Loyola Marymount, tomorrow at 2 p.m.
