WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Playing in their inaugural Colonial Athletic Association Championship, the College of Charleston women's tennis team downed hosts William and Mary on Saturday evening, 4-0, to advance to the finals where they will face the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The women's team won't be the only Cougars fighting for a CAA Championship tomorrow however, as the men's team – who also downed William and Mary earlier in the day – have earned a finals berth of their own.
“It was a really good day for us,” said College of Charleston director of tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “Both our men's and our women's teams here at the College of Charleston are each other's biggest supporters and I'm proud of what both teams have been able to accomplish. For us, I spent a lot of sleepless nights thinking about this re-match against William and Mary. They are such a strong, talented team. At the end of the day, we were able to see out the doubles point through gutsy performances from (Jenny) Falcone and (Katherine) Schofield and then did a good job of going up early in singles, which took the crowd out of the match a little bit. It was an all-around good team performance.”
In doubles play on Saturday, The College picked up the crucial point against The Tribe, but not without a battle. The Cougars' No. 2 team of Kelly Kambourelis and Mara Argyriou beat Nabil Farah and Hope Johnson, 8-2, but W&M's No. 3 tandem of Leeza Nemchinov and Julia Casselbury posted an 8-3 victory over Samantha Maddox and Jamie Harrell. The point was then decided at No. 1 as CofC's Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield edged Melanie Roy and Sydney Smith, 8-6.
The Cougars closed out the victory with three singles wins in straight sets. Maddox was the first off the court at No. 4 as she beat Farah, 6-4, 6-1, before Kambourelis followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Maria Belaya in a meeting of first-team All-CAA performers at court one. Argyriou closed out the win at the No. 3 flight by getting past Roy, 6-1, 6-3.
It was CofC's 12th victory in its past 13 matches.
UNCW and CofC met during the regular season on April 4, with the Seahawks winning 5-2. Five of the six singles matches went three sets, with the Seahawks coming out on top in three of those.
“UNCW took it to us two weeks ago,” said Anastopoulo. “We'll need some help from them tomorrow, as well as having to play our best. Both teams want to win a championship and both teams are hungry – it should be a great match.”
