Sand Volleyball Defeats South Carolina, Falls To GSU

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston (6-3) split its two dual matches on the second day of the CofC Sand Classic, defeating South Carolina, 3-2, before falling to Georgia State, 4-1.

The Gamecocks (4-11) and Cougars played to three sets in three out of the five matches, and only one third set was decided by more than two points.

College of Charleston took a 1-0 lead after No. 4 pair of Kari Fidelholtz and Catey Warren defeated the Gamecocks' pair of Chynna Ratner and Litsa Darby in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-13.

South Carolina evened the dual at 1-1 on court No. 5. KoKo Atoa-Williams and Erin Neuenfeldt topped CofC's Kallie McKown and Maddie Hills in three sets by the scores of 21-16, 16-21 and 15-13.

The Cougars went back in front, 2-1, with a win on court No. 3, as Sloane White and Andi Zbojniewicz posted a solid, two-set victory, 21-17 and 21-16. Zbojniewicz finished the flight with 17 kills and 39 digs, while White added 14 kills.

The dual came down to the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs matches, and College of Charleston clinched the win with a victory on court No. 1. The Cougars' Emily Neideffer and Darcy Dorton defeated South Carolina's Megan Kent and Paige Wheeler in three sets by the scores of 19-21, 21-18 and 15-11. Dorton had 25 kills and four aces in the win.

In the second dual of the day, CofC succumbed to Georgia State by a score of 4-1. White and Zbojniewicz continued their strong day by winning the third flight in three sets, bouncing back from a 21-18 loss in the first set to win 21-15 and 15-13. White finished with 16 kills and six aces, while Zbojniewicz tallied 36 digs.

Fidelholtz and Warren sent the fourth flight to three sets after they won set one, 22-20, but GSU's Milani Pickering and Natalie Wilson won the second set, 21-17, and won the flight with a 15-7 win in the final set.

College of Charleston concludes the CofC Sand Classic tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against nationally-ranked Florida State.
