RALEIGH, N.C. – On short rest after two weekend matches and arduous travel, the College of Charleston men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to NC State at Dail Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars (2-4-1) weathered a heavy Wolfpack attack in the first half, but conceded a 26th minute goal and were forced to play catch up from there.
"We fought hard tonight and used a good number of players as we battled against a tough NC State team in our third game in five days,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “I'm disappointed we didn't get a result but I'm very proud of the effort our team gave and look forward to our next game against Furman."
After giving up the initial goal, Charleston reinstated itself and controlled long portions of the second half, and even outshot NCSU in the second period, but NC State capitalized on CofC's commitment to getting numbers forward with an 89th minute insurance goal which sured up the result.
The Wolfpack's first goal came in the 26th minute when Roland Minogue fired a shot from long range which Cougar goalkeeper Brian Kilgallon made the initial save on, but the rebound fell to Nick Surkamp who toed the opportunity inside the left post to give NCSU the lead.
After CofC peppered the opposing end with scoring chances over the next 60-plus minutes of game clock, NCSU solidified the result in the 89th minute after a scramble inside the box led to Zach Knudson's second goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0 with 1:51 remaining.
Despite NCSU's second goal, CofC fought until the final second and put a pair of shots on frame in the waning moments of the match, but Wolfpack keeper Alex McCauley stopped two shots in the final 15 seconds to keep the Cougars off the board.
The Cougars will break from competition for a full week before welcoming former Southern Conference rival Furman to Patriots Point for midweek action on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
