Cougars Come Up Short Against Nationally-Ranked North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – No. 74 College of Charleston men's tennis fell 7-0 to a nationally-ranked North Florida that had the advantage of being six games into its season on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
“They were a few points sharper than us at key moments today,” head coach Jay Bruner said. “It was a good test for us with the season we have scheduled.”
Although the No. 69 Ospreys (5-2) won the doubles point, CofC showed strength on the court, particularly at the No. 2 seed, where junior Zack Lewis and sophomore Rodrigo Encinas held a 4-3 advantage over North Florida's Zach Goldberg and Lasse Muscheites when the action was halted. Seniors Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman hung in with the 28th ranked pair in the country, Jack Findel-Hawkins and Norbert Nemcsek, for a time before eventually losing six games to three.
In singles, three Cougars (0-1) forced their matches to a third set. Allanic came back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to capture the second with a 7-6 decision before ultimately dropping the third set 6-2. Newcomers Vasily Kichigin and Franz Sydow both won their first set of their matches 6-3, at the fourth and sixth seeds, respectively. Sydow rallied in the third set to push it to a tiebreak but ultimately ceded a 7-6 victory to Goldberg.
“We had plenty of momentum at times,” Bruner said. “We need to learn how to control the match with the new format of play.”
Charleston returns to Patriots Point to host Winthrop in its home opener on Feb. 8. The team will host an alumni match on Jan. 31.
