MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – On senior night, the College of Charleston men's soccer team upset No. 22 Hofstra 1-0 Saturday night at Patriots Point. A header off of Hamilton Carlin in the 18th minute helped secure Ralph Lundy's 300th career victory at the College of Charleston in his 29th season as head coach.
“This win feels great because it puts us a great position in the conference standings,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “If we keep playing like this we will be playing at home in November. Hofstra was 5-0 in the conference and ranked in the top 25 so getting a victory over them is what I'm truly happy about. I am so blessed to have been at the College of Charleston and have all these great players over the years. I love College of Charleston and this win means a lot to me.”
In the first half, neither team got into much of an offensive rhythm with only five total shots between both teams. The Cougars (6-5-2, 3-1-1 CAA) made one of their three first half shots count in the 18th minute. Senior midfielder Adam Purvis, who missed the last month due to injury, returned to the starting lineup for senior day and played a beautiful ball from the left side of the box. Junior forward Hamilton Carlin maneuvered around the Hofstra defense and headed his second goal of the season by Pride goalkeeper Patric Pray. Pray came into tonight's match with a CAA leading .822 save percentage.
“Tonight we went into a defensive mode maybe a little bit to early but our team gave an unbelievable effort to down Hofstra tonight. Kevin Shields came through again for us at goalkeeper. He is a shot stopper with a gigantic wingspan, which helps our defense tremendously. Not only did he catch a couple saves but he also put some over the bar. It was a great night for the Cougars and we have to keep it up.”
Hofstra (10-4, 5-1 CAA) came out firing after halftime, accumulating a 13-3 shot advantage throughout the second half. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Shields collected his third shutout of the season and made seven saves.
With tonight's win, men's soccer head coach Ralph Lundy added to his outstanding legacy by capturing his 300th victory in his 29th season as the head coach of the College of Charleston.
Ralph Lundy has left an indelible mark on the men's soccer program, CofC and the college soccer community as a whole. His legacy will long be preserved as one of the most successful, driven and passionate coaches in the country.
Overall, in 40 seasons as a head soccer coach, Lundy has compiled a 431-306-54 overall record. He currently ranks fifth among active division I men's soccer coaches in wins (431).
“The teams remaining on the schedule for us are really tough. We have to travel to Northeastern, UNCW, and Elon. Wilmington and Elon have been in the top 20 basically all season but that's what you expect playing the CAA. We will turn our focus to Northeastern next week but we are going to enjoy this win tonight.”
The Cougars will look to keep their momentum rolling when they travel to Northeastern next Saturday, Oct. 24 to take on the winless Huskies.
