CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston volleyball battled for five sets for the third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association match, defeating Delaware 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13), at TD Arena on Tuesday.
“We were a little inconsistent today. I thought we made too many errors, but also fought through them to come away with an important conference win,” head coach Jason Kepner said.
The Cougars (9-8, 1-2 CAA) committed 29 attacking errors in the match, nine of which came in the first set putting Delaware out front early. CofC's quality of play increased as the match progressed as the team hit .342 in the second set and .440 in the decisive fifth set.
Melissa Morello recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 18 digs. It is the fourth straight match Morello has finished with 18 or more kills. Krissy Mummey finished with a match-high five blocks as CofC recorded 10 as a team.
Coming of a career-high 19-kill performance against Hofstra, freshman Kennedy Madison hit .333 against the Blue Hens and picked up 17 kills. Morello led all players with 18 digs while Britney Vallez posted 17. Mackenzie Cooler recorded her second 40-assist game of the season and Allison Beckman chipped in with 16.
With the loss, Delaware (8-9, 0-4) has now dropped four straight conference matches and are 0-7 all-time versus The College. College of Charleston improves to 3-3 in five-set matches this season.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday as the team travels to face Elon. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
