MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team was shut out 2-0 by Delaware on Wednesday evening at Patriots Point. The loss drops the Cougars to 5-4-1 on the season and 2-1 in the CAA.
“I think tonight might have been one of the best first halves we played all season,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “I think we had ten shots and we pressured them well but we just didn't finish. We had chances to score and we didn't put them away. We played in their half of the field most of the night but just couldn't find the back of the net of any of our opportunities. They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't, which was the difference in the game.”
Despite the Cougars having a 10-3 shot advantage in the first half, the Blue Hens made one of their three shots count when Ben Sampson beat Kevin Shields on an assist from Soren Frost in the 18th minute. CofC controlled pace of play for most of the first half but headed into the break down 1-0.
Just four minutes into the second half, a foul was called in the box on CofC awarding the Blue Hens a penalty kick. Jaime Martinez knocked in the penalty kick for Delaware to give them a 2-0 lead with 40 minutes remaining.
The Cougars tallied a season-high 19 shots in the loss with junior midfielder Adan Noel launching his season-high ten shots with five on goal. CofC also held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Delaware goalkeeper Todd Morton made many timely saves to stall the Cougar attack and ended up with an eight-save shutout.
Head coach Ralph Lundy will go for his 300th career victory at the College of Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 10 when the Cougars host James Madison at Patriots Point.
