MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season Sunday, wrapping up the third and final day of the CofC Tennis Classic at Patriots Point.

Competition was fierce once again, with the Cougars drawing the Winthrop Eagles for the last round of singles play. Of the six CofC players to compete, Liza Fieldsend pulled off the lone-victory in the top flight over Alice Garcia of Winthrop by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Fieldsend finished the weekend going 1-2 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles. Her partner Rachel McNeely posted an identical line for the tournament following her loss to Mariana Humberg (5-7, 0-6).

Sophomore Sarah Jane Jones played her best match of the tournament, meeting Tijana Uzelac in a very competitive affair that ultimately slipped away, 5-7, 3-6. Elsewhere, Mara Argyriou followed her victory Saturday with a strong showing against Caitlin Cridland in the fifth flight (5-7, 2-6). In flight six, freshman Sarah Zschunke had her match against Monica Aguado go the distance, falling just short 3-6, 6-3, 6-10. Four of the six Cougars competing Sunday managed to drag their opponents into a tiebreaker.

“Over the course of the weekend, we found a way to compete harder and closer with these high-level schools as time went on,” assistant tennis coach Oliver Reynolds said. “We probably need to focus on getting into a little better shape heading into the off-season, both physically and mentally. We struggle a little when we get deep into sets, and that's something we'll need to address.”

With the conclusion of the tournament, the Cougars have a clear idea of what they need to work on heading into the winter months. They will have the next nine weeks to get ready for their first opponent of the season, the Appalachian State Mountaineers. That's scheduled for Jan. 16 in Boone, N.C.
