CHARLESTON, S.C. – Three Cougars registered double-digit scoring efforts, but it wasn't enough as the College of Charleston women's basketball team was outlasted by the Hofstra, Pride, 69-57, in front of over 1,600 fans in house to celebrate the team's third-annual STEM Education Day.
The game marks the second-consecutive outing in which the Cougars (4-19, 2-10 CAA) have played well on John Kresse Court, but fallen just short of victory. Leading the way on the stat sheet was sophomore Bre Bolden, who dropped a team-high 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds – marking her fifth double-double of the season. Senior sharp-shooter Erin Hall and junior Jacqueline Luna-Castro each scored 13, while freshman point guard Shiclasia Brown pitched in with five assists.
As a team, the Cougars shot the ball at a 37% clip, knocking down seven treys and forcing the Pride in to 21 turnovers; but a near 50% effort from Hofstra combined with a 20 point edge in bench scoring proved too much as the Long Island outfit moved to 15-9 on the season, good enough for fourth place in The Colonial.
It was all Hofstra early as the Pride jumped out to a quick 15-4 lead heading in to the first media timeout, but the Cougars – as they have done so many times this season – fought their way back in to the game, eventually cutting the deficit to just one, 31-30, following a late jumper from Bolden.
The Cougars again held tough early in the second stanza, maintaining a one-point differential with under-12 to play. However, the narrow margin wouldn't last for long as the Pride soon utilized a 13-3 run to take a 54-44 lead at the under eight-minute media timeout. From there, the visitor's lead would grow to as many as 16, before a series of deep three-pointers from Hall brought the Cougars to within six at the one minute mark. It would get no closer than six though, as the Pride knocked down six consecutive free-throws to claim their eighth conference win of the season, 69-57.
The Cougars will now make their way north for a Sunday showdown with William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. The Tribe (11-12, 5-7 CAA) currently sits seventh in the conference standings.
