CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston rode the momentum from Saturday's wins and Monday's doubles win over the top ranked duo in the country all the way to a 6-1 victory over Rutgers Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The win boosts the Cougars to a 4-11 record overall and third win in less than a week. Rutgers falls to 6-5 on the year after losing to Buffalo 4-3 on Monday at Patriots Point.
“A lot of credit goes to Rutgers because it definitely wasn't ideal conditions today for them,” CofC Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. “It was breezy and a little bit warm. We play better when it's a little bit breezier because we have a little more experience in it.”
Charleston captured the doubles point with wins at the No.1 and 2 spots to give them an early lead. Sophomore Mara Argyriou and senior Samantha Maddox cruised to a 6-0 win over second-seeded Lindsay Balsamo and Chloe Lee. Senior Jenny Falcone and junior Katherine Schofield, who defeated the No. 1 doubles team in the country 6-3 yesterday, continued to play well at the top spot, earning a 6-2 victory over Gina Li and Mariam Zein for their fifth win of the year.
“It would have been easy for our No. 1 doubles team to have a let down after yesterday but Jenny and Kat came out here and got an early jump at 5-0 and held on for a nice 6-2 victory,” Anastopoulo said. “This was probably one of our better doubles performances of the year and it carried right over into singles.”
In singles, CofC won matches on courts two through six and might have swept the Scarlet Knights if junior Brooke McAmis hadn't needed to retire as a result of a nagging injury.
Senior Jenny Falcone, the Cougars' most consistent singles player for the Cougars as of late, defeated Zien 6-3, 6-4 to pick up her seventh win of the season, six of which have come at the No. 4 spot.
On the next court, senior Grace Baker earned her second win of the season as the No. 5 seed, coming back from a late rally by Farris Cunningham to win the tiebreak and the match 6-0, 7-6. The third member of the senior class, Samantha Maddox, also went 2-0 on the day, adding a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lee to her earlier doubles triumph. Schofield and freshman Helena Nyikos also picked up straight-set victories as the third and sixth seeds, respectively.
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow with a 1 p.m. matchup against Massachusetts. UMass is currently 7-4 on the season after dropping a tight 5-2 match to Samford at Patriots Point on Tuesday morning. The team is led by freshman Ana Yrazusta who was named both the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week as well as the ECAC New England Tennis Player of the Week for her 4-0 performance last week in singles and doubles in the team's wins over Providence and Saint Louis.
