CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis topped old Southern Conference foe Davidson 5-2 on Saturday morning to cap off a week of five matches at Patriots Point Tennis Center.

“This is an old Southern Conference rivalry and Davidson is having a very good year so to pick up a win after playing so many matches in a row is a very good way to end 'hell week,'” CofC Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said.

The Cougars (6-12, 0-1 CAA) went 3-2 in five home matches, ending the week with a pair of 5-2 victories over UMBC and Davidson (8-6).

Charleston earned the doubles point for the third time this week with wins at the No.1 and No. 3 spots. CAA Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week senior Jenny Falcone and junior Katherine Schofield started the Cougars off with a 6-1 triumph at the top spot. The pair went 3-1 on the week with a 7-7 overall record in 2015.

Sophomore Mara Argyriou and senior Grace Baker clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 sweep of Wildcats' Ava Todd and Blake Nickles on court three. The duo is now 2-0 in as many matches. Baker is Argyriou's fifth doubles partner of the season.

“We looked good today in doubles,” Anastopoulo said. “It was one of our better performances today.”

In singles, CofC won four matches before the Wildcats were able to get on the scoreboard. Senior Samantha Maddox won her third straight match as the Cougars' top seed and extended her singles win streak to four with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elaina Crummer.

“Sam[antha] has really come into her own,” Anastopoulo said. “As her coach, I'd love to take the credit but all the credit goes to her mom and the advice she gave her. Sometimes motherly love is better than any coaching advice that can be provided.”

Senior Grace Baker, who normally plays at the No. 5 spot but has competed at No. 4 for the last two matches, rose to the challenge again and downed Jenna Brunner 6-4, 6-0, for her second straight victory on court four.

Rookie Sarah Jane Jones clinched the match with her second straight win at the No. 5 spot. The Jacksonville, Fla. native who has competed in the six spot until yesterday's match against UMBC, earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ally Sexton for her fifth win of the year.

Fellow freshman Helena Nyikos followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 win of her own over Nickles on court six. Nyikos now has four collegiate wins under her belt, two of which come at the No. 6 spot.

The women's tennis team will have a week and a half to rest following its action-packed month that featured 10 home matches in two weeks. The Cougars will resume its 13-match homestand on April 2, when they host Delaware for their second conference matchup of the year.
