WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Just 24 hours after knocking reigning CAA Champions and No.1-seeded UNC Wilmington out of the tournament, No. 4 seed College of Charleston men's tennis succumbed to a 4-3 loss at the hands of No. 3 William & Mary in the CAA Championship finals on Sunday afternoon.
The Tribe (16-12, 4-0 CAA) returned atop the CAA podium for the first time in 10 years, picking up their fourth CAA championship in program history. The Cougars (15-10, 4-2 CAA) end their season with a second straight trip to the conference title match in just their second year in the league.
Rain put a damper on the match, forcing the two teams to move indoors around 4 pm, as most players were in the midst of their first sets in singles competition. Junior Zack Lewis gave CofC its lone point, pulling out a 7-5, 6-3 win over Lars de Boer at the No. 5 spot. The All-CAA Academic Team honoree finishes the season on a seven-match win streak, helping him to a team-best 17-5 singles record.
Senior Brice Allanic held his own against W&M's No. 1 seed and CAA Rookie of the Year Christian Cargill. The Colombes, France native defeated Cargill 7-5 in the first set and was up 5-3 in the second when the Tribe's Will Juggins clinched the match for William & Mary with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court two.
William & Mary took an early 1-0 lead with doubles wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Cargill teamed up with Damon Niquet to snap junior Josh Record and sophomore Rodrigo Encinas' eight-match win streak with an 8-5 victory over the CofC duo to clinch the doubles point. Charleston had captured the doubles point in tournament wins over both JMU and Elon in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
The loss marked the end of Allanic and Alon Faiman's collegiate career. The pair was named to the All-CAA Second Team in doubles and leave the College as the 2012 Southern Conference champions, while also having led their team to back-to-back CAA conference finals. Allanic was named the CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week on April 7, following a pair of singles and doubles victories over The Citadel and JMU.
