CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis swept Delaware in both singles and doubles en route a 7-0 victory on Thursday afternoon at Patriots Point.
The win was the team's first conference win of the season, with the only other CAA match this year coming in the form of a 7-0 loss to nationally ranked William & Mary in late February.
The Cougars (8-12, 1-1 CAA) won all three of the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over the Blue Hens (3-6, 0-3 CAA). Junior Brooke McAmis and Grace Baker, who paired up for the first time this season at the No. 3 spot claimed an 8-1 victory over Abby Martinez and Amanda Studnick. Not far behind was senior Jenny Falcone and junior Katherine Schofield, who also earned an 8-1 victory on court one to improve to 8-7 on the year as the Cougars' top double seed. Senior Samantha Maddox and sophomore Mara Argyriou completed the sweep with an 8-2 triumph over Kim Milla and Denny LaMachia to move to 3-1 on the season from the No. 2 spot.
CofC carried the momentum into singles competition where five of the six Cougar victories came in straight sets. After Falcone increased the lead to 2-0 by making quick work of her opponent on court three (6-3, 6-1), freshman Sarah Jane Jones captured her fifth straight win at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Martinez. Argriou's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Arielle Shuren at the No. 2 spot clinched the match for the Cougars.
CAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week Maddox earned her sixth straight victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Delaware's top seeded Jonjic Danea. After a slow start to the season while facing several nationally ranked competitors, Maddox has gone 7-3 in the last 10 matches, with five of those wins coming at the top spot.
The Blue Hens won only one set on all six courts in singles competition. After cruising to a 6-1 victory in the first set, third-seeded Schofield faced a second-set rally by LaMachia, losing 6-4. She and LaMachia remained tight throughout the third set before Schofield captured the victory in a tiebreak.
Baker capped off the afternoon with her fourth consecutive victory, 7-6, 6-4 triumph on court five. The senior, who has battled injuries throughout her career, has won five of her last 10 matches.
The Cougars will get another crack at a CAA opponent tomorrow afternoon when they meet the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington for a rematch of last year's conference tournament final. The match, which was originally scheduled for Saturday morning, has been moved up in anticipation of thundershowers on Saturday morning. Fans can keep up with all the action via Live Stats.
