CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston Director of Athletics Matt Roberts has announced the hiring of Doug Matthews as the Cougars' next head women's tennis coach.
Matthews comes to Charleston after serving as the head coach at Xavier since 2015 and the Director of Tennis since 2022. While at Xaiver, Matthews led the Musketeers to six straight BIG EAST women's tennis championships and seven NCAA tournament appearances.
Matthews takes over for Angelo Antastopoulo, who retired at the end of this season after 35 years at the helm of the program.
"It is an honor to be named the next women's tennis head coach at the College of Charleston. I would like to thank Matt Roberts, Jerry Baker, and everyone else involved in the process," said Matthews. "I am excited to continue the great tradition as well as add to it. My family and I cannot wait to get started!"
Matthews and his staff have earned five BIG EAST Staff of the Year honors and have coached four BIG EAST women's tennis players of the year along with four BIG EAST Freshmen of the Year. He guided the Musketeers to a school record 22 wins in 2019.
"Doug is a proven winner, as a student-athlete and as a head coach. He has a tremendous track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining talented student-athletes while competing for and winning championships," said Roberts. "We are excited to welcome Doug, his wife Kara, and their three daughters to the Charleston community and the Cougar Athletics family."
Matthews was a member of the Xavier men's tennis team from 2005-09, leading Xavier to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference championships in his junior and senior years and the first-ever men's tennis team appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2009. While at Xavier, he compiled a 75-47 career singles record, which ranks fourth all-time in program history. In doubles, he ranks third all-time with a 75-52 career record and he is second all-time at Xavier in total wins with a 150-99 career record.
He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team four consecutive years, earning an Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Year award in 2006, and being named the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Performer in 2008 and 2009. Additionally, Matthews earned Xavier's Rev. Paul O'Connor Award, given annually to the university's male student-athlete that represents the ideal of the school based on academic and athletic excellence.
A Maineville, Ohio native, Matthews was a two-sport star at Kings High School. He is a member of the Kings High School Hall of Fame. Matthews and his wife Kara, a former Xavier tennis standout in her own right, have three daughters, Kinsley, Brynn, and Myla.
