CHARLESTON, S.C. – All four participating players of the College of Charleston men's tennis team scored wins at the ITA Carolinas Regionals in Cary, N.C., spelling a successful weekend for the program.
Benedikt Henning
Sophomore Benedikt Henning lost his opening singles matchup to the No. 4 ranked player in the region, Gabriel Friedrich, by a score of 6-2, 6-0. After that though, Henning ripped off three wins in a row, carrying him all the way to the Elite Eight of the Singles Consolation bracket. Henning eliminated UNCW's Andrew Torres (7-6(4), 6-4), UNC Upstate's Ankush Arora (7-5, 6-4) and Davidson's Rick Saad (7-6(4), 6-1) before finally falling to East Carolina's Vlad Anghel (6-2, 7-5).
Ryan Khan
Khan was the only Cougar to register a win in the main draw of singles play, beating out Coastal Carolina's Francesco Migliano by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. That's where the success would end, however, as the following match paired Khan with the No. 1 player in the region, Skander Mansouri of Wake Forest, to whom he lost 6-1, 6-1. Khan and Henning paired up for doubles action, but lost both of their matches in two sets.
Vasily Kichigin
Kichigin went 1-2 in singles action, succumbing to South Carolina's Sam Swank in his opening match 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Kichigin scored a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Maksym Konovalov before dropping to Wofford's Haris Poric 6-4, 6-3.
Juan Estevarena
Estevarena went 1-2 in singles play, falling to TJ Pura of Duke (6-2, 7-6(4)) to drop down to the consolation bracket. There, he picked up a win over Davidson's David Hager by a score of 6-2, 6-2 before falling in a three-set heartbreaker to Charlotte's Oriol Puig (0-6, 7-5, 6-3). Estevarena and Kichigin put an impressive run together in doubles play, reaching the Sweet 16 of the main bracket with wins over pairings from USC Upstate (0-6, 6-3, 10-8) and UNCW (7-6(5), 7-5). Unfortunately, they were eliminated in three sets at the hands of Ronny Georgi and Freddie McGeehan of East Carolina, 7-6(3), 4-6, 8-6.
The Cougars return to action in two weeks time, when they will split the team to take part in two fall tournaments. Some members of the squad will head to the Georgia Southern Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., while the rest will make for Birmingham, Ala. for the USTA ITF Futures at the campus of Samford University.
