CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (3-7-3) hits the road for its final non-conference match of the season Wednesday, when they head off to Atlanta for a showdown with Georgia State (10-6) at 7 p.m.
The Cougars' last game was a close road loss in Williamsburg against the William & Mary Tribe. Though they were outshot 9-2 in the opening period, Kevin Shields had an excellent half with five saves. However, an upper body-injury forced him to retire at halftime, and the Tribe capitalized with three quick goals. The Cougars got two back by way of a Nico Rittmeyer header and a Leland Archer penalty kick, but they ran out of time in the 3-2 defeat.
The last time the Cougars and Panthers met in soccer was at a neutral site affair on the campus of Furman University two years ago. Rittmeyer scored two goals in that one, while Brian Kilgallon earned the shutout for CofC in the 2-0 win.
The Panthers are led by a pair of offensive dynamos in Hannes Burmeister (9g, 3a) and Max Hemmings (7g, 3a), the latter of whom has scored points in the last three games. In goal, Yannic Horn has played each contest for GSU, and sports a 1.34 GAA with 46 saves on the season. Georgia State enters the matchup on a three game winning streak, having most recently blanked Appalachian State 1-0 on the road.
