MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The hope of postseason play remained alive for the College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-8-3; 2-3-2 vs. CAA) on Saturday, as the Cougars pulled off a 2-1 win over Northeastern (6-10; 3-5 vs. CAA) on Senior Night.
• The Cougars got on the board early on a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out. Nicolas Jeausseran sailed the ball into the box, where it landed a couple yards in front of the keeper. Just then, Cesar Murillo got a light touch on it to put CofC up 1-0 in the ninth minute.
• The College struck again just 11 minutes later on a play that started with Adan Noel in the corner. Noel lobbed the ball in to fellow-senior Nico Rittmeyer, who finished off the play in the 20th minute to score his fourth goal of the season.
• Brian Kilgallon played his second consecutive strong game for the College, although he was not called on often. The Cougars outshot the Huskies 9-0 in the first half and 13-9 over the course of the game, and Kilgallon only had to make two saves. The only NU goal came in the 81st minute when Khori Bennett converted a PK attempt to cut the CofC lead to one.
• The Cougars honored seven seniors prior to the game, and all three who logged minutes in the contest found themselves on the scoresheet.
"Everybody was all-in in that first half tonight," head coach Ralph Lundy said. "We pressured them, stopped them from executing, and to be honest we were unfortunate not to score even more than we did. That's what we've been looking for all season. I give Northeastern a lot of respect for turning it up in the second half, but we committed to defense and got through it."
With the win, the Cougars' postseason scenario for Tuesday becomes quite simple: win and they're in. Depending on the outcomes of other games, they would either be the fifth seed or the sixth seed, which would see them traveling to either Williamsburg to play William & Mary or to Wilmington to play UNCW. A loss or a tie would eliminate CofC from CAA Tournament contention.
The Cougars wrap up the season Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against the visiting Drexel Dragons (1-13-2; 0-7 vs. CAA).
