Cougars and Seahawks Set for CAA Tournament Clash

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team begins its post-season Saturday, when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to do battle with the No. 3 seeded UNCW Seahawks in the opening round of the CAA Tournament.
The Cougars faced two must-win situations to close out the regular season, coming through on both occasions. The College hosted Northeastern for its senior night festivities, and in a game where all three active seniors scored points on the night, CofC emerged with the 2-1 victory. After that, Drexel came to the Lowcountry on Tuesday for a makeup game, and the Cougars prevailed in that as well by a tally of 1-0.
Brian Kilgallon has drawn the start in goal over the last three matches for the Cougars, going 2-1 in that span. Playing in relief of an injured Kevin Shields, the junior has stopped 10 shots for a 0.65 GAA and a .833 save percentage.
The Cougars hosted the Seahawks earlier in the season, who were at the time receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches Poll. After a scoreless first half, Nicolas Jeausseran opened the scoring for the Cougars in the 59th minute. UNCW would go on to tie it up 15 minutes later, there the score would remain. It was an incredibly scrappy contest, with five total yellow cards being given out.
After losing three straight contests, UNCW closed out its regular season with a 1-0 win over Delaware and a scoreless tie with Elon. The Seahawks are led offensively by Julio Moncada (8G, 3A) and Stian Sandbekkhaug (6G), the latter of whom scored the tying goal against CofC earlier in the year. In goal, Ryan Cretens has carried the load for the Seahawks all year long. He sports an impressive 0.96 GAA, and has only been called on to make 35 saves over the course of the season.
The game is scheduled to get underway Saturday night at 6 p.m. at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
